My Desktop Starmax

In January, 1997 I purchased a desktop model Starmax 3000/180, because I thought it offered a better value than the comparably priced Apple Performa 6360 or PowerMac 7200. After three years of use and the addition of several internal components, I am still convinced that I made the right choice.

I decided to create this site as an exercise in simple web page design, using photos I took during installations. The photos show the main components inside the desktop Starmax, and how I accessed the RAM slots and PRAM battery. I replaced the original ATAPI CD-ROM drive with a SCSI Matsushita CD-ROM drive, and added a second IDE hard drive, the Motorola SCSI upgrade kit, a bay cooler fan kit, and a NewerTech L2 cache G3 card. Please remember, these photos are just a record of what I did with my desktop Starmax and are not meant to be a detailed installation guide. More complete guides can be found at several other web sites run by dedicated members of the Starmax Community.

I also have a page describing problems and solutions after installing OS8.6. I now have a very stable and fast Starmax that should see many more years of life.
